Barbara Nakamarra Wilson was born in 2007 in Alice Springs Hospital, the closest hospital to Nyirripi, a remote Aboriginal community 440 km north-west of Alice Springs in the NT of Australia. She is the daughter of Christine Napanangka Michaels and Ambrose Jupurrurla Wilson and the granddaughter of Alice Nampijinpa Michaels. She has two siblings Danny and Collis.
During the School holidays the children from the local schools in Nyirripi and Yuendumu are encouraged to visit the Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu, to paint their Jukurrpa or Dreaming stories. They are provided with an unrestricted palette of acrylic paint and small boards. Barbara participated in the Art program.
Barbara Nakamarra has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu and Nyirripi, since 2014. She paints her mother’s and grandmother’s Lappi Lappi Jukurrpa, (Lappi Lappi Dreaming), stories relating directly to her land, its features and the plants and animals that inhabit it. They have been passed down through the generations for millennia. She continues to use an unrestricted palette, blending her own patterns with ancestral motifs to depict her traditional Jukurrpa.
When she is not painting, she enjoys spending time with her friends.
