Opening their exhibition at the Botanic Garden with Outstation Gallery, taking part in DAAF, celebrating as NATSIAA finalists and visiting their mother’s Dorothy Napangardi’s painting in the collection of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, which won the Telstra Art Award in 2001. So much pride and emotion in walking side by side in their mother’s footsteps.

Detail of Debbie Napaljarri Brown`s beautiful Wanakiji Jukurrpa (Bush Tomato Dreaming). The Wanakiji Jukurrpa (bush tomato [Solanum chippendalei] Dreaming) travels through Yaturlu (near Mount Theo, north of Yuendumu). “Wanakiji” grows in open spinifex country and is a small, prickly plant with purple flowers that bears green fleshy fruit with many small black seeds. After collecting the fruit the seeds are removed with a small wooden spoon called ‘kajalarra’. The fruit then can be eaten raw or threaded onto skewers called ‘turlturrpa’ and then cooked over a fire. ‘Wanakiji’ can also be skewered and left to dry. When they are prepared in this way it is called ‘turlturrpa’ and the fruit can be kept for a long time. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa, particular sites and other elements.

Large variety of beautiful artworks by local artists for sale in situ, through galleries and online. Volunteering is a rich experience and a deep dive into art life in Yuendumu.

Volunteered here for 1 week and had a wonderful time meeting/helping the community artists who came in for paint supplies and/or to paint, and getting to know the other volunteers and staff. Everyone was so welcoming, and it was a very humbling experience spending time at the art centre and Yuendumu.

I spent a lot of time looking at all the art while helping organise, the paintings are so detailed and most come with the description of the dreaming story behind the painting.

Would highly recommend checking this out if you're driving through the area, or if you're in the market to buy Aboriginal art from somewhere that does give the money back to artists (I saw it happening each afternoon 😉). Also FYI if you hope to see artists on your visit, they only come in on Tues, Wed, Thurs.
