Karnta manu Yarla manu Ngarlajiyi Jukurrpa (Women’s, Bush Potato & Bush Carrot Dreaming)
This painting depicts aspects of two of the major Jukurrpa for which Jakamarra/Jupurrurla men and Nakamara/Nupurrurla women are the custodians. In the time of the Jukurrpa (Dreamtime), ancestral heroes of the ‘yarla’ (bush potato [Ipomea costata]) and ‘ngarlajiyi’ (bush carrot [Vigna lanceolata]) fought a great battle that ranged over a large expanse of Warlpiri country. The ‘yarla’ ancestors were jealous of the ‘ngarlajiyi’ ancestor’s ownership of bordering country. Travelling from Yumurrpa in the south, the ‘yarla’ met the ‘ngarlajiyi’ coming from Waputarli. Between Waputali and Yumurrpa they had a great battle and many ‘yarla’ and ‘ngarlajiyi’ people were killed. Neither side won a conclusive victory. The ‘yarla’ had travelled out of their roots in the ground but they were so angry that they went back underground. After the battle two old men continued to strike each other with stone knives. Both men finally gave up and returned to their respective homes.
