Yarla Jukurrpa (Bush Potato Dreaming)

This Jukurrpa comes from Yumurrpa, west of Yuendumu. Yarla are tasty fibrous tubers which grow underground from a low spreading plant. At Yumurrpa there are rockholes formed by the roots of Dreamtime Yarla plants breaking apart the ground. The concentric circle in this work is the Dreaming site, the lines represent the roots of the plant and also the way in which the Jukurrpa spreads across the land. ‘U’ shapes are Nakamarra and Napurrurla women with parraja (food carrier) and kurlangu (digging stick) gathering yarla.
