We are incredibly proud to be at the opening of our exhibition Revisions: Made by the Warlpiri of Central Australia with Patrick Waterhouse.

11 July – 5 October 2025 across Whitby Museum and Pannett Art Gallery.

The fruits of an extraordinary collaborative project and now exhibition – titled Revisions – was initiated by the acclaimed British conceptual artist Patrick Waterhouse with Warlukurlangu in 2014. Waterhouse travelled to Yuendumu and Nyirrpi communities multiple times over the proceeding decade where Warlukurlangu artists ‘revised’ and ‘painted over’ an archive that Waterhouse had assembled of old maps, prints, paintings, flags and documents relating to the ‘discovery’ and colonisation of Australia by the British.

It is with the greatest sadness that we share the loss of our dear friend, colleague and previous chairman O. Jungurrayi Sims. Jungurrayi passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning. He was lovingly cared for by his two sisters Wendy Nungurrayi Brown and Lyn Nungurrayi Sims, his wife Ormay Nangala Gallagher, along with their extended families and community. We thank the Alice Spring Hospital, Royal Flying Doctors, Yuendumu Clinic and Purple House who supported his wish to pass away on country.

Jungurrayi was born in 1960 in Yuendumu. He was one of seven children of founding Warlukurlungu Artists, Paddy Japaljarri Sims and Bessie Nakamara Sims. Some of Jungurrayi’s most cherish memories, were of his childhood traveling and camping with his family in the country of his ancestors. He went to primary school in Yuendumu and then high school at Yirrara College. He continued his education in Alice Springs, at Batchelor Institute for Indigenous Tertiary Education and attended further studies in Sydney and Perth. Jungurrayi was also a devout Christian and trained as an evangelical pastor in Townsville. Jungurrayi painted for Warlukurlangu Artists for over 3 decades. He was elected to its executive committee in 2002 and served as Chairman of Warlukurlangu from 2007-2023. Jungurrayi also served on the Desart board as their Chairperson.

Jungurrayi was immensely proud to follow in his parents` footsteps, as an artist and authority on Warlpiri culture and art. He was an eccentric and colourful personality, a joyful charmer and captivating storyteller, who had a lasting impact on all who met him. Jungurrayi painted his father Paddy’s stories of his country - stories that were passed down to Paddy by his own father, and their fathers before that for millennia. Jungurrayi travelled the globe with enthusiasm and panache, passionately representing Warlukurlangu Artists at many exhibitions, conferences and symposiums. Jungurrayi vividly shared his adventures, as an advocate and ambassador of Warlpiri art with his community and family right up to the end. May he now rest in peace as he joins his father, mother, brothers and dear sister.

Loved the art here. They have workshops for the community that produce a lot of the art. We bought some dog art. The money goes towards caring for the town dogs.

Volunteered here for 1 week and had a wonderful time meeting/helping the community artists who came in for paint supplies and/or to paint, and getting to know the other volunteers and staff. Everyone was so welcoming, and it was a very humbling experience spending time at the art centre and Yuendumu.

I spent a lot of time looking at all the art while helping organise, the paintings are so detailed and most come with the description of the dreaming story behind the painting.

Would highly recommend checking this out if you're driving through the area, or if you're in the market to buy Aboriginal art from somewhere that does give the money back to artists (I saw it happening each afternoon 😉). Also FYI if you hope to see artists on your visit, they only come in on Tues, Wed, Thurs.
