Biography

Grace Napangardi Woods was born on 26 May 1973 in Alice Springs Hospital, the closest hospital to Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community approximately 290km north-west from Alice Springs in the Central Desert of Australia. She has lived primarily in Yuendumu for her entire life, though spends much time with family in Alice Springs and in Nyirripi. 

Grace’s father is a Warlpiri man from Yuendumu and her mother is Arrente from Alice Springs. Her grandfather Gerhard Inkamala was a watercolour painter and a founder of the Hermannsburg School. She has 4 children and several grandchildren. As a proud cultural woman Grace enjoys taking part in cultural activities, women’s business and dancing. She paints Wardapi Jukurrpa (Goanna Dreaming) and Purtulu Jukurrpa (Mt Theo). When she is not painting she loves taking care of her family and her home.
