Biography

Danilda Nakamarra White was born in 2001 in Alice Springs Hospital, the closest hospital to Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community 290 km north-west from Alice Springs. She is the daughter of Sabrina Napangardi Granites and Isaac Japurrurla White and granddaughter of Alma Nungarrayi Granites (1955 – 2017), major artists painting at the Yuendumu Art Centre. Danilda attended the local school before going to Kaurna Plains School, an Aboriginal school in Elizabeth, a northern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, which caters predominantly for Aboriginal students from Reception to Year 12.

Danilda began painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu, in 2017 and continues to paint when she comes home during her school holidays. She learnt to paint, watching her mother and grandmother paint, both well-known artists recognised in Australia and overseas. She paints her mother’s Mina Mina Jukurrpa, (Mina Mina Dreaming) – Ngalyipi, a very important women’s dreaming site west of Yuendumu and Nyirripi, near Lake Mackay and the WA border. These ‘dreamings’ have been passed down to her through the generations for millennia.

When Danilda is not studying or painting, she likes to play basketball and softball.
