GERALDINE NAPANGARDI GRANITES- Geraldine paints ‘Ngalyipi Jukurrpa’ (Snakevine Dreaming) from Mina Mina. Mina Mina is an extremely important ceremonial site for Napangardi and Napanangka women that is located approximately 600kms west of Yuendumu, just east of Lake Mackay and the WA border. The area has a ‘marluri’ (salt lake or claypan) that is usually dry, without water. There are also a number of ‘mulju’ (soakages), sandhills, and a large stand of ‘kurrkara’ (desert oaks). The Mina Mina Jukurrpa is an important source of Warlpiri ritual knowledge and social organization, particularly relating to the different roles performed by men and women.

The ‘kirda’ (owners) of this Jukurrpa are Napangardi/Napanangka women and Japangardi/Japanangka men. There are a number of different Jukurrpa associated with Mina Mina; artists usually choose to depict one particular Jukurrpa in their paintings. In addition to ‘ngalyipi’ (snakevine), these can include ‘karnta’ (women), ‘karlangu’ (digging sticks), ‘majardi’ (hairstring skirts/tassels), ‘kurrkara’ (desert oak [Allocasuarina decaisneana]), and ‘jintiparnta’ (desert truffle [Elderia arenivaga]).

The Mina Mina Jukurrpa tells the story of a group of ancestral ‘karnta’ (women) who traveled from west to east. In the Dreamtime, these ancestral women danced at Mina Mina and ‘karlangu’ (digging sticks) rose up out of the ground. They collected these digging sticks and started travelling to the east. They carried their digging sticks over their shoulders and they were adorned with ‘majardi’ (hairstring belts), white feathers, and necklaces made from ‘yinirnti’ (bean tree [Erythrina vespertilio]) seeds. They continuously anointed themselves with ‘minyira’ (shiny fat) to increase their ritual powers as they went along. As the women travelled, they were followed by a ‘yinkardakurdaku’ (spotted nightjar [Eurostopodus argus]) from the Jakamarra subsection. The bird would call out and then hide in the bushes behind them as they travelled.

COLIN JAKAMARRA GIBSON - Colin was born in the bush near Lake Mackay. He was taken early on to Mt Doreen Station and later to Yuendumu. He lived at Areyonga where he met his wife Jennifer Napaljarri Lewis. Together they moved to Mutitjulu and worked with the Uluru/Kata Tjuta Rangers for six years before settling down at Nyirripi Community.

Colin paints his grandfathers country, a site named Wanaritjarra, north of Kiwirrkurra community. He tells the story of Winiki, a small bird that travels from Wanaritjarra to Lake Mackay then onto Mt Doreen.

Loved the art here. They have workshops for the community that produce a lot of the art. We bought some dog art. The money goes towards caring for the town dogs.

Such beautiful and unique artworks. Great and easy website experience to view the online gallery, find out more about the amazing artists and buy a wonderful artwork. Paintings also came with an information sheet about the peice and story. Thank you !!

Large variety of beautiful artworks by local artists for sale in situ, through galleries and online. Volunteering is a rich experience and a deep dive into art life in Yuendumu.

Volunteered here for 1 week and had a wonderful time meeting/helping the community artists who came in for paint supplies and/or to paint, and getting to know the other volunteers and staff. Everyone was so welcoming, and it was a very humbling experience spending time at the art centre and Yuendumu.

I spent a lot of time looking at all the art while helping organise, the paintings are so detailed and most come with the description of the dreaming story behind the painting.

Would highly recommend checking this out if you're driving through the area, or if you're in the market to buy Aboriginal art from somewhere that does give the money back to artists (I saw it happening each afternoon 😉). Also FYI if you hope to see artists on your visit, they only come in on Tues, Wed, Thurs.
