Daisy Napangardi Frank was born on Coniston Station, best known as the site of the Coniston massacre, which was the last known massacre of Indigenous Australians, in August 1928. Daisy was born shortly after, in around 1932. She had a traditional upbringing, travelling around the country where she learnt traditional indigenous skills and lore. She now lives in Yuelamu, a community located on the site of the old Mount Allan Pastoral lease and situated approximately 300 km north west of Alice Springs on the Tanami Track, which runs from the Stuart Highway to Halls Creek in Western Australia.
When Daisy was a young woman her parents and the community encouraged her to paint. However, she didn’t start painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu, until 2011. Yuendumu is about 30 ks north of Yuelamu. She paints her Yurrampi Jukurrpa (Honey Ants Dreaming), passed down by her father and her grandfather’s father for millennia. Dreamings, which related directly to her land, its features and the plants and animals that inhabit it.
When Daisy is not painting she loves to go hunting for goanna and honey ants.
