Luurnpa (Red-backed Kingfisher)

This painting depicts the ‘luurnpa’ (red-backed kingfisher [Todiramphus pyrrhopygius]). Kingfishers bring the hot weather. When people hear the kingfisher singing early in the morning, they know that windy weather is coming.

The kingfisher lives in banks along creek beds. Its ‘Jukurrpa’ (Dreaming) place is Mount Doreen, called ‘Luurnpakurlangu.’ The kingfisher Dreaming travels from Luurnpakurlangu to Mawurrungu.
