Karnta Jukurrpa (Womens Dreaming) – Pikilyi

This version of the Karnta Jukurrpa (Women’s Dreaming) story is from Pikliyi (Vaughan Springs) to the west of Yuendumu. It tells of how a man of the Japangardi skin group was waiting and watching for two ‘karnta’ who were making damper out of bush flour ground from seeds. The Japangardi wanted to be the ‘lover boy’ for the two ‘karnta’. Pikilyi is a very important place for Warlpiri people and a number of Jukurrpa belonging to Napanangka/Napangardi women and Japangardi/Japanangka men pass through there, including ‘yuparli’ (bush banana [Leichardita australis]) and ‘nguri’ (tawny frogmouth [Podargus strigoides]), a half-man/half-bird.
