PAULINE NAMPIJINPA SINGLETON 💙 // “Painting k PAULINE NAMPIJINPA SINGLETON 💙 // “Painting keeps me busy. I like doing painting. I like the stories and like the colour.” ⠀ ⠀ Pauline was born in Alice Springs hospital and grew up in Yuendumu an Aboriginal settlement located 290 kms north west of Alice Springs in the NT of Australia. ⠀ ⠀ She attended the local school and then moved to Alice Springs to attend Yirara College. After finishing school she moved back to Yuendumu and has been painting with the Warlukurlangu Artists since 1999. ⠀ ⠀ Pauline is very actively involved with the local Mt Theo Youth Program helping to take care of the kids. She has also worked with Warlpiri Media doing broadcasting for local language radio programs. ⠀ ⠀ Pauline is married and has two young children, Bradley and Ishmail who take up a lot of her time. ⠀ ⠀ Pauline paints her mother’s Jukurrpa stories, Dreamings which relate directly to her land, its features and the plants and animals that inhabit it.⠀ ⠀ She loves spending time visiting the country around Yuendumu and telling her kids the stories of this land. ⠀ ⠀ When she is painting she sometimes paints by herself and sometimes with her family. When Pauline is not working, looking after children or painting she likes to go hunting for bush tucker.
MARGARET NANGALA GALLAGHER 💜 // Margaret was bo MARGARET NANGALA GALLAGHER 💜 // Margaret was born in 1967 in Alice Springs Hospital, the closest hospital to Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community 290 km from Alice Springs in the NT of Australia. ⠀ ⠀ She is the daughter of Pauline Napangardi Gallagher, an artist who has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists since 2005. ⠀ ⠀ Margaret attended the local Yuendumu School but shortly after moved to Nyirripi with her family. ⠀ ⠀ Margaret still lives in Nyirripi, an Aboriginal community 160 kms west of Yuendumu. ⠀ ⠀ She is single and has one sister and three brothers. Margaret has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists since 2007. ⠀ ⠀ Our Aboriginal owned and governed art centre is located in Yuendumu, and has been providing the residents of Nyirripi with materials to paint since 2005. ⠀ ⠀ Margaret paints with her mother and learnt to paint watching her mother and other people in the community painting. ⠀ ⠀ She particularly enjoys painting with her mother as it is an opportunity for her and her mother to share their Jukurrpa stories, Dreamings passed down to her by her father and mother and their parents before them for millennia. ⠀ ⠀ Margaret paints her Yankirri Jakurrpa (Emu Dreaming) from her father’s side and this Jukurrpa story belongs to Jangala/Jampijinpa men and Nangala/Nampijinpa women. ⠀ ⠀ When Margaret is not painting she is studying at Batchelor College in Alice Springs as well as working at the Women’s Centre in Nyirripi.

RIVER DREAMING 🌀// Wulpayi Jukurrpa by Pamela N RIVER DREAMING 🌀// Wulpayi Jukurrpa by Pamela Napurrurla Walker 🤲 This Wulpayi Jukurrpa (Kakutu river Dreaming) comes from country north of Yuendumu near Willowra community. While the Kakutu river only flows from time to time after good rains, the beds and banks of the river are an important resource for the people of the area. Many ‘mulju’ (soakages) are found along the sandy river bed and water is sourced from these by digging down to the water-table. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa, associated sites and other elements. In paintings of this Jukurrpa the flowing river can be represented by strait or sinuous lines and several important ‘mulju’, including Wakatinyi, Yarruku and Wurlpatiparnta are often shown.
RUTH NUNGARRAYI SPENCER 😁// Ruth was born in Al RUTH NUNGARRAYI SPENCER 😁// Ruth was born in Alice Springs Hospital, the closest hospital to Yuendumu. ⠀ ⠀ She has grown up most of her life in Yuendumu. First attending the local school and then moving to Alice Springs where she attended Alice Springs High School. ⠀ ⠀ Further studies gave her qualifications to work in administrative work. Ruth has held a number of administrative positions since leaving school. ⠀ ⠀ For 13 years she worked with the Community Development Employment Project (CDEP) in Lajamanu before transferring to the Yuendumu Administration Office. ⠀ ⠀ She has also worked for Warlpiri Media, CDEP Council, and the Yuendumu Library and is presently working for the Shire Council. ⠀ ⠀ She is now married to Raymond Robert Pluto and they have one young son, Korie. ⠀ ⠀ Ruth has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists since she was a teenager. ⠀ ⠀ Her grandfather and grandmother told her the stories of her Jukurrpa (Dreaming) but it was Daisy Napanangka Nelson (1930 – 2001) who also painted with Warlukurlangu Artists, Ruth’s Number two Grandmother or Big Sister (Wendy and Alma Sims) who taught her Yanjirlpirri Jukurpa (Star Dreaming) painting. ⠀ ⠀ Ruth often travels and visits family in Lajamanu, Balgo, and Kalkaringi. Aside from painting, Ruth enjoys playing basketball and softball.

JUDITH NUNGARRAYI MARTIN ✨ // “I wanted to pai JUDITH NUNGARRAYI MARTIN ✨ // “I wanted to paint the stories to teach my kids.”⠀ ⠀ Judith was born in 1976 in Alice Springs Hospital, and comes from a family of artists. ⠀ ⠀ Her mother is Helen Nampijinpa Robertson and her grand-father is Shorty Jangala Robertson, both well-known artist who paint for Warlukurlanga Artists. ⠀ ⠀ Judith attended the local school in Yuendumu before studying at Yirara College, an Aboriginal boarding College in Alice Springs. When she finished school she returned to Yuendumu. ⠀ ⠀ She moved to Nyrripi in 1991 where she later married a ‘Nyrripi boy’. They have 3 sons and 1 daughter.⠀ ⠀ Judith has been painting with the Warlukurlangu Artists since 1994. ⠀ ⠀ As a young child she would watch her family paint and listen to their stories. Although her production of artwork was initially sporadic – she began to paint full time when she had her sons and daughter. ⠀ ⠀ Judith paints her father’s Jukurrpa (Dreamings), that include Janganpa Jukurrpa (Brush Tail Possum Dreaming) and Yankirri Jukurrpa (Emu Dreaming). ⠀ ⠀ These Dreamings have been passed down through the generations for millennia and relate directly to the land, its features and the animals and plants that inhabit it. ⠀ ⠀ Judith has exhibited in group exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney and Japan. She uses an unrestricted palette to develop a modern interpretation of her traditional culture. ✨⠀
