Paula Nungarrayi Kennedy was born in 1960 in Yuendumu and has lived in Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community 290 km northwest of Alice Springs her whole life. She attended the local Yuendumu School. She is married to Roger Jangala Samson, also an artist with the Warlukurlangu Artists. Paula has one daughter from a previous marriage, and two sons from her second marriage. She is a grandma and spends a lot of her time helping to take care of her grandchildren.
She has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu, since 2000 and paints both stories passed down to her from her mother and her father. These are creation stories which are closely linked to her traditional country and the animals and features of that place. She paints several dreamings but the one that features constantly is Karnta Jukurrpa (Women’s Dreaming). These stories have been passed down through the generations.
When Paula is not painting she works for the local women’s shelter.
