Nancy Napurrurla Oldfield was born in Yuendumu, an Aboriginal community located 290 kms north west of Alice Springs in the central desert of Australia. She has lived there all her life. She attended the local school and after finishing high school Nancy trained to be a teacher through Batchelor College in Darwin. When she returned to Yuendumu she worked at the school where she has been teaching pre-school for over 20 years. She is a dedicated and committed teacher. Nancy is married and although she has no children of her own she has raised many relatives in particular Ashley who she has raised since he was a little baby. Nancy has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu, since 1990. She paints her mother’s Jukurrpa stories, Dreamings which relate directly to her land, its features and the plants and animals that inhabit it. These stories have been passed down to her by her mother and father and their parents before them for millennia.
