JUDITH NUNGARRAYI MARTIN ✨ // “I wanted to pai JUDITH NUNGARRAYI MARTIN ✨ // “I wanted to paint the stories to teach my kids.”⠀ ⠀ Judith was born in 1976 in Alice Springs Hospital, and comes from a family of artists. ⠀ ⠀ Her mother is Helen Nampijinpa Robertson and her grand-father is Shorty Jangala Robertson, both well-known artist who paint for Warlukurlanga Artists. ⠀ ⠀ Judith attended the local school in Yuendumu before studying at Yirara College, an Aboriginal boarding College in Alice Springs. When she finished school she returned to Yuendumu. ⠀ ⠀ She moved to Nyrripi in 1991 where she later married a ‘Nyrripi boy’. They have 3 sons and 1 daughter.⠀ ⠀ Judith has been painting with the Warlukurlangu Artists since 1994. ⠀ ⠀ As a young child she would watch her family paint and listen to their stories. Although her production of artwork was initially sporadic – she began to paint full time when she had her sons and daughter. ⠀ ⠀ Judith paints her father’s Jukurrpa (Dreamings), that include Janganpa Jukurrpa (Brush Tail Possum Dreaming) and Yankirri Jukurrpa (Emu Dreaming). ⠀ ⠀ These Dreamings have been passed down through the generations for millennia and relate directly to the land, its features and the animals and plants that inhabit it. ⠀ ⠀ Judith has exhibited in group exhibitions in Melbourne, Sydney and Japan. She uses an unrestricted palette to develop a modern interpretation of her traditional culture. ✨⠀

JACOB JUNGARRAYI SPENCER ⚡️// “I like my cou JACOB JUNGARRAYI SPENCER ⚡️// “I like my country, it is important.” ⠀ ⠀ Jacob was born in 1964, in Yuendumu. When he was young he attended the local school before going to Alice Springs where he completed his schooling at Yirara College, an Aboriginal boarding school. ⠀ ⠀ He continued his education training as a bookkeeper with the Yuendumu Council. In 1985 he moved to Nyirripi where he still lives and works with the Council. ⠀ ⠀ Both of Jacob’s parents have passed away, but he is the adopted son of another highly successful artist from Yuendumu, Paddy Japaljarri Stewart. ⠀ ⠀ He has two sisters, Rahab and Ruth and two brothers, Edgar and Lloyd. ⠀ ⠀ Jacob is married to Joy Nangala Brown. They have two children, a daughter and son and grandchildren. ⠀ ⠀ His daughter Debbie Napaljarri Brown also paints with Warlukurlangu Artists. ⠀ ⠀ Jacob began working with Warlukurlangu Artists in 1997. He paints his father’s and his grandfather’s Jukurrpa stories, Dreamings that stretch back at least fifty millennia. ⠀ ⠀ He particularly likes to paint Wardapi Jukurrpa (Goanna Dreaming) from his father’s side and also because the goanna is his totem. ⠀ ⠀ When Jacob is not painting or working he likes sport and hunting for bush tucker.
OVERWHELMED WITH KINDNESS 🙌❤️// We wanted t OVERWHELMED WITH KINDNESS 🙌❤️// We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the good will and support of so many of you over the last few months. ⠀ ⠀ As you may know, due to the threat of coronavirus we had to close our doors in March, it’s been a tough time to say the least. ⠀ ⠀ With the art centre shut it meant our artists were unable to paint, which had a big impact on the community. ⠀ ⠀ Over the last three months we’ve been inundated with orders and messages of support - THANK YOU ❤️ In such strange times for the world your acts of kindness go a long way and are truly felt and appreciated. ⠀ ⠀ We’re excited to say that our doors are open and our artists are able to paint again 💕 ⠀ ⠀ Thank you Thank you Thank you 🥰
LOLA NAMPIJINPA BROWN 🧡 // “My dreaming, My G LOLA NAMPIJINPA BROWN 🧡 // “My dreaming, My Grandmother, Mother and Aunty at Willowra, they taught me to paint my dreaming.” ⠀ ⠀ Lola was born in Ti-Tree, NT, a small community 193 kms north of Alice Springs. ⠀ ⠀ When she was a little girl her mother and father took her to Willowra where she grew up. ⠀ ⠀ She went to school there and then to Alice Springs where she attended high school before moving to Mount Allan where she married her promised husband. She was married for 25 years. ⠀ ⠀ While living in Mount Allan, Lola was an active member of the Museum. She made music sticks and necklaces, and painted coolamons and beads. ⠀ ⠀ Lola has 7 children and 11 grandchildren. Her three sons still live in Mount Allan and her daughters live in Willowra, Tennant Creek and Mount Allan. She likes to visit her children whenever she can. ⠀ ⠀ In 1994 Lola returned to Willowra for a short time before returning in 1997 to Mount Allan to live with her children. ⠀ ⠀ At Mount Allan she began painting but as there is no longer a Museum and Art centre in Mount Allan, she was dependent on the availability of materials. ⠀ ⠀ In 2002 Lola moved to Yuendumu to paint with Warlukurlangu Artists. ⠀ ⠀ It was here in Yuendumu that she also met and married her present husband, Christopher Japangardi Poulson, who also paints with Warlukurlangu Artists. ⠀ ⠀ Lola has been painting with us since 2002. She attends the Art Centre every week day where she paints her Water Dreaming stories, stories which relate directly to her land, its features and animals.

VALARIE NAPANANGKA MARSHALL 🌹 // Valerie was bo VALARIE NAPANANGKA MARSHALL 🌹 // Valerie was born in Alice Springs Hospital, the closest hospital to the Ltyentye Apurte Community, also known as Santa Teresa, an Arrernte indigenous community in the Northern Territory, Australia, located about 80 kilometres from Alice Springs. ⠀ ⠀ Shortly after her birth her parents moved first to Yuendumu and then to Nyirripi where Valerie now lives. ⠀ ⠀ Valerie attended Kormilda College, an Aboriginal boarding college in Darwin. After she finished school she returned to Nyirripi. She is married and has four children.⠀ ⠀ Valerie has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and since 2001. ⠀ ⠀ Warlukurlangu makes regular visists to Nyirripi to drop off canvas, paint and brushes for the artists and to collect finished artworks. ⠀ ⠀ She paints her father’s dreaming, dreamings which are related to her land, its features and the plants and animals that inhabit it. ⠀ ⠀ These dreamings have been passed down through the generations for at least 50 millennia. To depict her traditional Jukurrpa, Valerie uses traditional iconography, while developing a modern individualistic style to depict her traditional Jukurrpa.⠀ ⠀ When Valerie is not working at the local store or painting she enjoys hunting with her family. ❤️
