GERALDINE NAPANGARDI GRANITES 🤩 // Geraldine wa GERALDINE NAPANGARDI GRANITES 🤩 // Geraldine was born and has lived in Yuendumu all her life.

She is the daughter of Alma Nungarrayi Granites, a strong participant of Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation and granddaughter of Paddy Japaljarri Sims (dec) and Bessie Nakamarra Sims (Dec): two of Warlukurlangu Artists founding artists.

She attended the local school and has two sisters and one brother who also paint with Warlukurlangu Artists.

She also has four children, 2 sons and 2 daughters.

Geraldine is a shy person who is very involved with her large extended family and enjoys being around children and helping the family’s grandchildren.

She learned by observing her grandfather’s art works as well as Judy Napangardi Watson’s work (a Warlpiri artist who is at the forefront of a move towards more abstract rendering of Jukurrpa /Dreaming stories).

Geraldine is working hard to develop a modern interpretation of the traditional culture.

She started painting at the Centre in 2001 and paints the Mina Mina Dreaming story which is an important woman’s story. ❤️

COUNTRY TO COUTURE// "First Nations cultur COUNTRY TO COUTURE//

"First Nations culture is layered with stories of peace, prosperity and creativity."

“I’m hoping that this year, because we can’t actually leave the country, we’ll see the industry lean into the fact this is an Indigenous country, and find ways to present us to the world that go, ‘hey, we’re Australian. But this is us too."

“You know how in other countries, fashion is really influenced by culture and identity? We haven’t really embraced our identity through fashion yet.”

“I wanted to create a situation where the people I was working with had an encounter again, a chance to flip the power dynamic. I wanted to give the people in this community agency over their own representations.”

BEFORE & AFTER ❤️ // Ada Nangala Dixon was bor BEFORE & AFTER ❤️ // Ada Nangala Dixon was born in 1952 at Mt Doreen, an extensive cattle breeding station about 55km west of Yuendumu in the Northern Territory.

She was born into a well-known artist family, her father was Pintubi artist Pegleg Jampijinpa and her mother was Margaret Napangardi Brown, a successful artist with Warlukurlangu Artists.

Ada attended the local School at Yuendumu and when she finished she helped out at the Yuendumu School and then Nyirripi School. She is married and has 5 children and 7 grandchildren.

Ada began painting with Warlukurlangu in 2009.

She would watch her sister Joy Nangala Brown paint and decided she would paint too. She paints her Father’s Jukurrpa (Dreaming), especially Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming),Dreamings which have been passed down over the generations for millennia and relate directly to the land, its features and the plants and animals that inhabit it.

Ada uses an unrestricted palette to develop a modern interpretation of her traditional culture.

When Ada is not painting she goes hunting especially on the weekends, “I love it!”
