Biography

Judy Napangardi Dixon was born in Mount Denison, 332 km north-west of Alice Springs. When she was little her parents would take her out bush showing her sites and teaching her the traditional ways of her country. Judy went to school at Willowra for a short time and when a young adult settled down in Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community 290 km northwest of Alice Springs in NT of Australia, where she married. She is now a widow and not having any children she loves to look after her two nieces, Molita and Hayley. She has a Grandmother living in Alice Springs. Her country is Yuelamu, an area around Yuendumu. Judy has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu, since 2004. She learnt to paint from her mother, Lucy Napurrurla Dixon, who has been painting with the Art Centre since 1991. Lucy likes to paint Jukarrarra Jukurrpa (Native Seed Dreaming), her grandfather’s Jukurrpa, but she also paints Karnta Jukurrpa (Women’s Dreaming) and Janmarda Jukurrpa (Bush Onion Dreaming). Judy loves to paint and is working hard to develop a modern interpretation of her traditional culture.
